What is SEO?
The acronym SEO simply means Search Engine Optimization and, in poor words, it defines all the activities we perform to optimize our blog to better rank its position on search engines like Google or Bing.
The SEO process is divided into 3 main steps:
- TECHNICAL OPTIMIZATION: this step allows to search engines to access and properly index your blog’s pages. Doing SEO means also adopting innovative solutions like AMP and Schema.org to answer the users’ search evolution.
- CREATING CONTENTS: your blog’s contents will have to respond to different research purposes. If they are appreciated by users, they will also be appreciated by search engines, because they are aware your content has provided the best answers to their questions.
- PROMOTION OF CONTENTS: promoting content designed to be shared is a fundamental phase for the success of your SEO campaign. Being mentioned with a link from authoritative sites is an unequivocal way to communicate to Google that yours is a quality website.
Almost everything we do online starts with a search: if we search for an answer or want to buy something, we search for it on the web.
This guide will explain everything you need to know to start optimizing your website immediately and increase the natural non-paid visibility on search engines.
How a Search Engine Works
Before we dig into this post, I must show you how a search engine like Google or Bing works today (because during the internet evolution they made a lot of changes):
- Crawling – The search engine crawls the web to discover new content with sophisticated programs called crawlers. Once new pages are found, the spiders follow the links found to discover new content in a continuous chain process.
- Indexing – The search engine stores a copy of the crawled content in an index. The index is stored in high power servers so that it can be found in real-time.
- Ranking – When the user carries out a search, the search engine algorithms evaluate, basing on the positioning factors, which content best responds to his informative question.
Also, before we start nailing our blogs’ SEO, we MUST KNOW our audience.
You can’t offer optimized content about pet photography to someone that is interested in recipes.
To better understand who your users are and what they are looking for, answer these 4 questions:
- What are they really interested in?
- What problems do they want to solve by searching the web?
- What kind of language do they use?
- Who are your competitors?
Once answered, you will have an initial list of search terms and a list of competing websites to draw from to find new keywords.
There are 3 parameters that must guide you in choosing the best keywords that suit your positioning goals:
- Search Volumes – The number of times a keyword is used on a monthly basis for a search
- Relevance – A term may also have high search volumes but may not be relevant to the site you are optimizing
- Competition – Keywords with high search volumes can potentially attract many users but also have high competition.
Before proceeding any further, I want to explain the Long-Tail model.
According to this strategy, it is advisable to position yourself for a higher number of keywords with lower search volumes rather than for a few very competitive keywords.

Your Blog Structure is Crucial
Your blog structure’s design, especially if it is wide in content, is a delicate phase that must be carefully considered.The architecture allows search engine spiders to find, scan and index the contents of your website.
There are 3 measures you can adopt and that can be useful for organizing and developing the architecture of a blog:
- the structure of the blog must be flat so that the most strategic pages are just a few clicks from the home page
- identify pages that receive multiple internal links, using a tool capable of emulating spiders such as SemRUSH Backlink checker
- place the most relevant pages at the upper levels of the navigation tree so that they receive multiple internal links
Optimize Your Internal Links
Internal links are links that go from one page to another in the same domain and are commonly used in the main navigation menu.
Well-Structured internal link architecture is useful because:
- promotes access and indexing of resources
- allows users to browse the site
- determines a hierarchy between the pages of the site
The text used as a link between the pages, called anchor text, is another parameter to be optimized: the text must be descriptive and predictive.
Doing this will help Google (and users) understand the content of the landing page.
Optimize Your On-Page SEO
The contents alone are not enough to ensure the good positioning of your web pages.
On-page SEO optimization allows you to make a blog relevant for specific search terms.
So let’s see in detail what are the fundamental structural elements of a web page to be optimized for search engines.
The structural elements of a web page to which the search engines give more importance is the Title tag.
This HTML tag can be found in the head tag of the source code of the page you are viewing.
To optimize the title tag in SEO key you must:
- limit its length to 55 characters (spaces included)
- enter the keyword at the beginning
- write in an appealing way, possibly including a CTA
Meta Description Tag
The Meta Description is the fragment of text associated with each web page that is displayed in SERP.
Often, users do not click on the first result offered by the engines but they scan the search results page to find the snippet that best meets their information needs.

- Use up to 145 characters (spaces included)
- Try to be short and include a call to action
- Remember to enter the keyword
- Remember, it’s always a matter of research intent.
Structuring a URL with a maximum of 3/5 words, according to some studies, seems to be rewarding and favors organic positioning.
Another aspect to consider is the inclusion of the keyword:
- if speaking and descriptive, it improves the user experience
- it is often used in external links as anchor text
Hx Title Markers
The hX title markers are HTML tags used to determine a hierarchy between the contents of a web page and have a positive influence on the ranking.
Here are some simple best practices to optimize them in the best way:
- there must be only one h1 per page and be populated with the target keyword of the page
- the title markers h2, h3, etc., can be used several times and must provide a clear description of the content they anticipate
Images SEO Optimization
If you are a blogger or write articles for an online newspaper, you will have wondered if it makes sense to insert images in your posts.
Obviously, the answer is yes.
Images make the textual resources of your website speak and contribute in a positive manner to the positioning of your content.
If you want to optimize an image for search engines, remember to:
- choose the file name carefully
- compress the file size to reduce loading times
- fill in the alt = “…” text with the keyword for which you want to position the page
In addition to contributing to On-Page SEO and user experience, images can also play an important role in conversions.
